apter 8: The trap is sprung
After a three hour journey, the train pulled into the cavernous Kings Cross station. James helped Abigail and his sister down onto the platform. They then followed a porter and their cases through the hustle and bustle of the busy and noisy station, the air thick with the smell of smoke from the engines constantly pulling in and out of the platforms. They made their way outside and the porter saw them to a taxi. James noticed Abigail excitedly looking all around her at the busy streets of the city as they climbed into the taxi.
âI take it you have never been to London before?â James smiled at her.
âNever.â She replied, her eyes fixed on the view through the window as the taxi rapidly made its way through the streets of London.
âI think itâs a ghastly place.â Marie commented. âFilthy, busy and noisy. I much prefer the wide open spaces and rolling hills of Upton, galloping through the fields on the back of my mare.â
âWell, I think itâs terribly exciting.â Abigail enthused. âThank you James for bringing me with you.â Marie rolled her eyes and gazed with disinterest through the opposite window.
âMy pleasure.â James replied, barely suppressing a chuckle at his choice of words, as that was precisely why he had invited her.
Having checked into the hotel, James and Marie spent the rest of the afternoon showing Abigail some of the sights of London, taking a stroll through St Jamesâs Park and walking up to Buckingham Palace and then walking up the mall to Trafalgar Square and on to Westminster, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. Abigail treated the whole experience with her customary wide-eyed enthusiasm and even his generally despondent sister seemed to enjoy herself.
After their evening meal back at the hotel, it was decided that they would go to a night club that James knew to be popular among Londonâs socialites. They retired to their rooms to prepare for the evening and agreed to meet in the lobby when they were ready. James was first to the lobby and wore his dinner suit. His sister was next wearing a dark purple dress. Abigail finally arrived, descending the lobby stairs in an exquisite dark red satin dress.
âYou look absolutely enchanting.â James smiled. Marie looked at him suspiciously.
âThank you.â Abigail smiled shyly and blushed. âShall we go?â
âLadies first.â James replied, gesturing to the door.
A short taxi ride later and they arrived at the exclusive nightclub. James smiled watching Abigailâs awed expression as she gazed up at the grand façade of the stone building. A red carpet led from the street up some steps and through the doors of the grand entrance, which was flanked on either side by two doormen. Recognising him, they nodded respectfully and swung open the doors. Once inside and having disposed of their hats and coats in the cloakroom, they moved into the ballroom, the air thick with the sound of the band and the smell of cigarette smoke. At the far side of the high ceilinged room, a band played on a low stage.
