NOVEMBER 22 - TANGIER, LUNE DE MIEL MAROCAINE

Ana Gabriela’s uncle Emile Bonnet (Mr. California ca. 1937) runs the Hotel Atlas in Tangier. A.G. told me about a German couple who came to Morocco on their honeymoon. They went out to a night club where the unsuspecting bridegroom apparently consumed a large quantity of majoun. Late that night the hall porter was wakened by blood-curdling screams from above. The terrified Moroccan crept to the door of the bridal suite, where the heavy crashing of furniture persuaded him to call the manager. He was on the phone to Emile when the sound of shattering glass was followed by a glimpse of a naked body hurtling through the air. Fortunately, the German’s leap from a second-storey window was broken by a car parked in front of the hotel. The car was a write-off but, miraculously, the German was not seriously injured. Emile arrived and opened the door with a skeleton key. The furniture in the room was smashed to smithereens. He said it looked like the work of a demolition team; everything had been reduced by some gargantuan force to kindling. Cowering in the corner, naked and shivering, was the bride.

The next day, after settling the bill, the honeymooners flew back to Germany.
