Chapter XVIII

Suspicions Arise from a Watchful Friend

Julius Dalton was awake in the early hours of the morning. He couldn’t sleep very well and after growing tired of lying in bed staring up at his ceiling, he decided to get some cardio in before the sun brought light over the London area. Given he was sharing a bedroom with Samuel while Kingston had his own down the hall, he worked himself quietly out of bed and threw on some joggers and a coat. When he had his trainers tied down, he slipped out of the flat without making a sound.

Rounding the tall brick building, he stepped completely into the shadows when suddenly the motion sensor UV ray lights kicked on, but he hadn’t been the one to trigger them. Confused, he poked his head back around the building, spotting a vehicle pulling into the gate closing off the campus. Who could be arriving back to Gregor House this late, or rather, early in the morning?

Curious, Julius remained hidden behind the bend of the wall. To his surprise, Hamilton appeared out of the parked car. He was dressed in joggers with a black overcoat protecting him from the bitter cold, and he wasn’t wearing any shoes, just a pair of black socks that, in turn, became soiled from the dirt of the pavement. For a while, Julius had noticed his former instructor’s frequent absence, but never thought too much of it. Hamilton was the top-ranking slayer, so being called out on duties more often than not came with the position, right?

Pondering Hamilton’s actions over these past several months, Julius recalled further back into the beginning of this year. It was nearly December as it was, and this behavior has been the same since April.

What has he been up to all this time?

While Hamilton surely kept up with the training of his now former students, he was only ever nearby during certain parts of the day. He would oversee their sessions with their new instructor, offer insight, and give a rather good helping hand when it came to developing their skills. Before he would disappear from the facility to go off wherever he went, Hamilton wasn’t a stranger to sharing words of encouragement regarding their skill sets and building upon their combat knowledge. Julius himself had noted how the blond man would single him out more often, always a bit more positive and reassuring in terms of how well developed of a fighter he was becoming. And…although very appreciative of the praise received, Julius couldn’t quite set down the paranoia eating away at him.

The following day, Julius kept a watchful eye on Hamilton. In the morning, the twenty-nine-year-old came out to see how their training was going, often offering his opinion on what they were doing wrong, or how to perfect certain moves with ease. All in all, he helped the current instructor until the training sessions came to a close. For the rest of the day, Hamilton stayed in his apartment, coming out only to speak with whomever called upon his assistance.
