Chapter Seven

A Favor

Anthony stood there, shocked at the news King Elfred had told them, when Larkin ran off without any hesitation. That wasn’t like him, Anthony thought, when Larkin had wanted to possess some wealth and fortune without marrying Elfred’s daughters.

He should’ve leapt at the chance to claim some land, instead of heading in the opposite direction. For a moment, even Anthony had entertained the notion of gaining some land that he could call his own.

He’d invite all of his siblings to live with him if they wore out their welcome with Prince Brian and Queen Stephanie of Wyndemere, especially Odette if her marriage with Brian dissolved. They’d have a home of their own and wouldn’t have to worry anymore about wandering around without shelter, or going back to challenge Kiernan for control of what was left of Solvania.

Duncan said he wanted to go back and fight Kiernan, even after everything that had happened to them, to reclaim their kingdom. Duncan would be king of Solvania after that, of course, if he won back the crown as the eldest.

Some of his older brothers supported Duncan’s idea, but Anthony would rather lay low and hide far away from Solvania. He hoped that Kiernan might forget about them, and let them live in peace in exile.

Anthony hadn’t even wanted to admit to being a prince of Solvania when his brothers and Odette had told their story to Prince Brian and Queen Stephanie. But the others insisted they should tell the truth about their life, so Anthony went along with it.

He hoped that whatever land King Elfred gave him or wherever he and his siblings settled, it might have a pond or lake, just in case. Anthony still didn’t want to be a swan and give up his humanity, but it was nice sometimes to be reminded of the old life.

Maybe he might indulge in a swim someday, whenever he was comfortable managing his human arm and legs in such an aquatic environment, though his wing might still be useful. Anthony was still struggling to get the hang of it, but he was close to figuring out what to do with them.

Anthony had noticed Larkin acting strangely back at the elfin palace, squeezing his hand so hard that Anthony could barely feel his fingers, although it was technically his wing and feathers. Perhaps Larkin was frightened half out of his wits, standing before Queen Carluna and the princesses, considering the precarious nature of their situation.

There was something else plaguing Larkin, though. Anthony had a feeling about it, but he wasn’t certain. Maybe Larkin was hiding something, but Anthony could barely tell, considering he’d only known Larkin for a few hours.

Maybe he was just seeing things. Larkin was a brave man, after all, and smart. Hardly anything seemed to throw him off, even when he knew how dangerous it was at Elfred’s castle.

He’d been foolish, Anthony realized, to stay here and find out what was going on with the princesses when he’d put both of their lives at stake.
