Chapter Twenty-One

RASHA AWOKE ON her back with warmth on one side. Morning sunlight blinded her, and as she twitched more awake, she winced at her right arm, which was pinned beneath something that had caused it to go numb. She glanced down and spat out blonde hair as she discovered Adriana nestled in the crook of her right arm. Her head rested on Rasha’s chest.

Rasha froze, first at Adriana’s nearness, and then at an urge not to move so she wouldn’t wake her. The two emotions collided until she forced herself to relax. Her arm tingled with pins and needles, but she ignored it while the princess slept on, unaware. The thought that Adriana trusted her enough—liked her enough—to snuggle close sent a heady swell of affection and giddiness coursing through her. A beat passed before she realized she was smiling, and then she couldn’t stop.

Adriana kissed her. Not only that, but Rasha replayed their conversation where Adriana told her she was kind and generous, and that she admired her. At the time, the princess’s words had seemed impossible, and she surely couldn’t have meant them.

But what if she did?

Rasha had never fooled herself into believing she was attractive, not as scarred and broken as she was, but Adriana somehow saw past that. Rasha’s gut squirmed, but the feeling was pleasant, warm. She hadn’t had such a reaction since she was twelve years old, and embarrassed about the communal baths and one of the other servant girls there, whom she found pretty. She had learned early on to tamp down such unwanted and dangerous feelings, but now, equal parts of fear and excitement warred inside her.

“Aw, aren’t you two cute,” Damian said.

Rasha jerked, and Adriana’s head almost slipped off her. Adriana smacked her lips and let out a tiny whine but didn’t wake up as Rasha carefully sat up and rearranged them. The princess’s head now rested on her thigh. Rasha glared at Damian, who crouched a few paces away, a playful grin on his lips.

“What? Aw, don’t worry about it. Just ignore me. All I can say is it’s nice to see that something good came out of our time down below, if you know what I mean.” He waggled his eyebrows.

“I… We didn’t… Nothing happened—”

“I’m joking. Geez.” He scrubbed a hand down his face. “It’s been a long night. I wouldn’t take anything I say too seriously right now.”

Rasha nodded and then frowned as she finally took in their surroundings.

They sat on a patch of cleared earth at the edge of Veltina Forest. The tree line began several paces away and continued up the side of an imposing mountain. Meanwhile, behind them stretched open air and the endless pools of Eulalie.

“They brought us all the way through,” she said, amazed. She cast a silent wave of gratitude to the water nymphs.

“Yup. And before you ask, Marth and Bryce are scouting to see what direction we should go in. They’re also hunting for some grub.”

Rasha blinked at him in disbelief.
