From the Astral plane, Aloka looked down upon a small man with forked mustaches. His astral sight allowed him much greater visual acuity than that which physical eyes conveyed. “As you will, Moulay,” echoed from the corners of the chamber. Aloka relocated to rejoin his body in the cell below Château Gaspard. As he awakened from the trance, the corners of his mouth moved upward. Delayed gratification was a sweetness he had learned to savor.
CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
Château Gilbert
René awoke violently disoriented. He was on his back, tied down. He had a flashback of being chained within a slave-hold. He shook his head to clear it and then looked around. He was in his room at Château Gilbert, and he was tied to the bed.
“Henri,” he bellowed. “Henri, get up here and untie me.” No one answered. “When I get out of here you will regret this.”
He struggled against the sheets binding him, but they were secure as was the solid oak bed. He tried to focus, to bring the esoteric power he had learned to degrade the bindings, but nothing happened. He tried to center himself and failed. For the first time he could not focus and this frightened him. It was who he was and it was gone, lost. His brain refused his demand.
“Henri, let me go,” He shouted. But no one answered. He continued to yell, the sound echoed off the walls. The afternoon passed and still no one came. “I am thirsty. At least have the decency to bring me water.”
Henri entered the room to light candles at sundown.
“Cut me loose. You are no longer in the employ of this house. You have betrayed me,” René screamed. Bloodshot eyes widened in fury, spittle sprayed from his mouth.
“Non, Master René, I will never betray you. Not on my life. Sleep well.” And with those words, Henri left, closing the door behind him.
“Come back here. I will have you flogged within an inch of your life. This is my house. I am the master.” Tears trickled down his cheeks. “I am the master of nothing.”

Doctor Zahrawi tied a final knot on Akeefa’s bandage. “No major ligaments or muscles have been severed, and you will have complete movement if not strength in that arm in a few weeks.”
“Even inebriated he could not bring himself to really hurt me.”
“I must disagree.” Doctor Zahrawi frowned. “A couple of inches one way or another and you would have been hurt badly.”
“At René’s level of skill, the point of the blade is never accidental. When can I exercise my arm?”
“Give it a couple of days. Rest now.”
The doctor gathered his instruments and said, “I will have Henri see you are served tea. You are to take in as much fluid as you can.” With that he nodded and left the room.
Akeefa looked around. Her accommodations were nothing like what she was accustomed to. Vivid blue satin curtains edged with cream embroidery draped the large windows. The floor was polished wood with patterned rugs on each side of the large feather bed.
