Eight

“Just relax. Place your fingers on the planchette, take a breath and imagine a protective shield around you.” Patrick placed his fingers down on the heart shaped object in demonstration.

“What do you mean, protective shield?” She asked, hesitantly.

“Well, there are all sorts of spirits who contact me. I’m able to cope with anything or anyone who comes through. But with you, they could see you as a window through.”

Eleanor looked confused.

“Just imagine yourself being wrapped in cotton wool or cling film. Anything that will protect you from becoming a way through.” Patrick said, his eyes set on hers.

“A way through from where?” Eleanor asked, her voice trembling ever so slightly.

“From the other side. Some spirits don’t realise they have passed. Some of them have been dead for years, too. It can be sad. But it can also be dangerous. I don’t often conjure up bad or evil spirits, but it is possible.”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears, it was as if she hadn’t paid any attention to the last part. “Do you think my Aidan knows he’s dead?”

Patrick had had that suspicion that maybe Aidan didn’t know, since his inability to contact her son. “Maybe not. He was just young, so he wouldn’t have been expecting to die.”

Eleanor Hopkirk’s tears spilled over. She stifled a sob and lowered her gaze again. Patrick wished he knew what she was thinking. David Hopkirk was absolutely adamant he did not kill his son. And with Eleanor Hopkirk sitting in front of him, grieving for her son, he couldn’t imagine who could have done it.

“Can I ask, what happened that day?”

Eleanor sniffed loudly. “Did you not follow the case? It was all over the local news.”

Patrick shook his head. “No, I wasn’t aware of any of this until David walked into my church and killed himself right in front of me.”

Now it was Eleanor who shook her head. “It must have been awful.”

“I thought you said you were happy that he suffered?”

She pursed her lips. “I didn’t really mean it. He was still Aidan’s dad and he wouldn’t have wanted that to happen to his dad. They were so close.”

Patrick sat up and took notice. This could be the opening he was looking for to find out what really happened. “If they were so close, what happened to make him throw Aidan from that window?”

Eleanor Hopkirk’s fingers trembled as they rested on the planchette. “Can we just get on with this? I don’t want to go over the details again, it’s just too much.”

“Of course. I’m sorry, I don’t mean to open up old wounds.” Patrick smiled.

Liar. She’s a bare faced liar!

Patrick placed his feet flat on the floor and rested his fingers back on the planchette. He was ready to try to make contact with Aidan Hopkirk. This time, his mother would be present. Perhaps this time, he would come through just for her. “Let’s begin.”

Eleanor closed her eyes. Patrick noted how blotchy and red her neck had become. The same thing happened to Jodie when she became distressed about something.
