THE YOGA PANT
Yoga has been around for thousands of years, offering the benefits of increasing your flexibility and strength, soothing your mind, and boosting your overall energy. Many use yoga as a proven method of lowering the blood pressure too.
Conversely, what can raise this style expert’s blood pressure is a pair of yoga pants that make you look more like you’ve been chopping and carrying wood for months. Why? Because once you know what to look for in a good-quality yoga pant, there is really no excuse not to own at least one pair that you can actually be a yogi in and one you simply wear for comfort. You just have to know what to look for so the price won’t put you into a downward dog at the register.
For women who are active yoga enthusiasts, there are rules that make your time on the mat more productive. Since your posture is critical when posing, you want to wear garments that stretch and skim the body—and not just for you, but so your teacher can actually see how your body is positioned, guiding you as you go along.
Anyone who has successfully taken even one yoga class will testify to the high sweat factor. And although from the outside it may look like you are sitting around an imaginary campfire, the only thing burning will be you, from the inside. Especially in Bikram yoga, which takes place in a heated studio. So, in general, your clothes should be in the latest quick-dry fabrics and have moisture-wicking properties.
The best yoga bottoms will be offered in a myriad of styles and details to suit your unique figure. There’s high-rise (best for long-waisted women), low-rise (for their short-waisted counterparts), reversible versions that help your body and budget, ones with slim legs (for slender women), and ones with wide legs (for gals with ample stems and hips)—a yoga pant isn’t just a yoga pant anymore. Many better brands even come in regular and tall lengths, and in fabrics suited for warming up or just for cooling down. So finding your best bottom is so worth it.
Most important, if you can invest in two pairs, start with a double dosage of black. Keep one for actual use in the gym, yoga class, or Pilates studio, and ride it till the seat wears out. Reserve the second pair to be worn only after your workout, so they always remain fresh and camera-ready, if you will. That’s the pair you can dress up and never get a second look (for the wrong reasons). You can branch off into other colors later, once you get the hang of keeping one for sweat and one for style.
