Dearest of all the signs that fleet

From lips that lovingly repeat

Again, again, their message sweet!

In the context of the poem, these kisses come from a girl who is ‘Full to the brim with childish glee’; they are the silent language of love. Viewed in the context of Carroll’s career, however, they come close to describing what he wanted from the Alice books. They were not just stories that invited kisses, like the King of Hearts’ suggestion that the Cheshire Cat ‘“may kiss my hand, if it likes”’. They were kisses.
