XANDER

For a year Xander had been poised on the precipice of madness, and Cece was waiting to push him over the edge.

He couldn’t tell if she actually wanted to kiss him or if she, like him, had survived death only to throw herself toward every hazard like she was helpless to the call of the void.

He did not want to be the reckless trap she threw herself into, but he’d ached for her so long and he was too weak not to give in.

Xander arched an eyebrow, hunger creeping into his gaze. “Is that what you need? For me to just take you so that you can be blameless?”

Cece licked her lips, dragging her teeth across her lower lip. That shattered his last semblance of control.

Xander kissed her like his entire existence depended on it. The world around them seemed to pause to make space for the suspended moment between them.

It was the same and yet not. Xander was stunned that something he’d done so many times could be equal parts mundane and strange. Their movements were practiced. Memory burned into muscles. His hands as hungry as hers were hesitant.

She put so much godsdamned sugar in her tea. It was disgusting, but it also gave her mouth a sweet lemony flavor. She tasted like goodness itself, if such a thing were possible. At times he thought himself a villain—kissing her like drinking in her sweetness would undo all his wrongs. He wished her lips were laced with absolution—wished it were so simple. She’d always been a blessing he was unworthy of but couldn’t stop wanting.

Gods help him—how had he ever stopped kissing her? How could he accept a true goodbye from the person he loved most in the world?

As if one kiss could undo months of hopeless longing. As if he could forget what it was like to fall asleep next to her every night and wake up beside her every morning. As if untangling the roots she’d grown deep in his heart was as simple as untangling his fingers from her hair.

Xander forced himself to focus. To remember the feel of her as she melted against him, soft in all the right places and strong underneath. Her lavender-lemon scent, mixed with his bergamot and cedar, like summer and winter at war with each other. The sound of her whimper as he lifted her and she wrapped her legs around his waist.

He wanted to kiss her all day. He wanted to make love to her until she looked at him and said his name as she always had, like he was the only thing in the world she wanted to see. He wanted to hold her against him all night and listen to her breathing. He was made of nothing but want in every moment with her.

He carried her over to the bed, sitting down on the edge with her in his lap. She hesitated, as if to draw away when he was not ready.

He felt the passion falter. The kiss was a fire burning fast and hot, soon to be struggling for air.
