After Ariana told Victor she made a deal with the sea witch, he went to see his mother. Ariana said she couldn’t tell him the deal herself, so he would go to the source to find out.

“What was the deal you made with Ariana, mother?” Victor asked Ursula.

“You take too much interest in the girl, my son. She is undeserving of it,” the sea witch replied.

“Tell me mother, please,” Victor pleaded.

Ursula hated seeing his son beg, so she told him, “If you must know.. I have given her a potion. If she drinks it, she can turn human for three days.”

“Three days?” Victor asked.

“It will take the sea king that long to search the seven seas, before he realizes his dear daughter is not in the water. Ariana has until the sun sets on the last day to marry that human,” Ursula replied.

“What happens if she marries the prince? What do you get out of helping Ariana?” Victor asked.

“She can stay with him as a human forever, and the king will lose his only heir,” The sea witch replied with glee.

So his mother was plotting to ruin the sea king, Victor thought.

“What happens if she doesn’t marry the prince?” Victor asked, dreading to know the answer.

“Then, Ariana will belong to me,” Ursula replied. “Again, the king can lose his daughter, or in exchange, give all his kingdom to me.”

“Is it only the human she can marry? Or could it be anyone else?” Victor asked, trying to find the weak spot in his mother’s contract.

“My dear son, you amaze me. If she can’t get the prince to marry her, who else could she marry in three days? It doesn’t matter who she marries,” Ursula said.

So there was one way, Victor thought.

Three days. The Prince was likely to fall in love and marry her long before then, Victor thought.

“You will lose, mother,” Victor said.

It was impossible the prince wouldn’t marry Ariana, Victor thought with bitterness. But he will see to it. She hadn’t drunk the potion and turned human yet, so there was still time. He will find some way to change Ariana’s mind.

Victor was leaving to find Ariana, when his mother's words stopped him.

“There is one last condition..” Ursula said.

There was something else that Ariana agreed to? Victor thought, worried.

“What is that?” Victor asked.

“If she doesn’t return to me, after failing to marry the mortal in three days, Ariana will turn to stone,” Ursula replied.

The sea witch's words terrified Victor. He knew Ariana would never give up her freedom, but he could never let her turn to stone.

“She will not be your prisoner, mother. Ariana will marry before the three days are over,” Victor said.

“You never know what the fates have planned, Victor,” Ursula said with a smile. “I have lived long enough to know this, my son, that human nature can surprise you.”
