After Ariana told Victor she made a deal with the sea witch, he went to see his mother. Ariana said she couldnât tell him the deal herself, so he would go to the source to find out.
âWhat was the deal you made with Ariana, mother?â Victor asked Ursula.
âYou take too much interest in the girl, my son. She is undeserving of it,â the sea witch replied.
âTell me mother, please,â Victor pleaded.
Ursula hated seeing his son beg, so she told him, âIf you must know.. I have given her a potion. If she drinks it, she can turn human for three days.â
âThree days?â Victor asked.
âIt will take the sea king that long to search the seven seas, before he realizes his dear daughter is not in the water. Ariana has until the sun sets on the last day to marry that human,â Ursula replied.
âWhat happens if she marries the prince? What do you get out of helping Ariana?â Victor asked.
âShe can stay with him as a human forever, and the king will lose his only heir,â The sea witch replied with glee.
So his mother was plotting to ruin the sea king, Victor thought.
âWhat happens if she doesnât marry the prince?â Victor asked, dreading to know the answer.
âThen, Ariana will belong to me,â Ursula replied. âAgain, the king can lose his daughter, or in exchange, give all his kingdom to me.â
âIs it only the human she can marry? Or could it be anyone else?â Victor asked, trying to find the weak spot in his motherâs contract.
âMy dear son, you amaze me. If she canât get the prince to marry her, who else could she marry in three days? It doesnât matter who she marries,â Ursula said.
So there was one way, Victor thought.
Three days. The Prince was likely to fall in love and marry her long before then, Victor thought.
âYou will lose, mother,â Victor said.
It was impossible the prince wouldnât marry Ariana, Victor thought with bitterness. But he will see to it. She hadnât drunk the potion and turned human yet, so there was still time. He will find some way to change Arianaâs mind.
Victor was leaving to find Ariana, when his mother's words stopped him.
âThere is one last condition..â Ursula said.
There was something else that Ariana agreed to? Victor thought, worried.
âWhat is that?â Victor asked.
âIf she doesnât return to me, after failing to marry the mortal in three days, Ariana will turn to stone,â Ursula replied.
The sea witch's words terrified Victor. He knew Ariana would never give up her freedom, but he could never let her turn to stone.
âShe will not be your prisoner, mother. Ariana will marry before the three days are over,â Victor said.
âYou never know what the fates have planned, Victor,â Ursula said with a smile. âI have lived long enough to know this, my son, that human nature can surprise you.â
