Chapter 9

The next morning, Jennifer woke up with a man in her bed. Of course, Micah wasn’t just any man. Even though she hadn’t known him long, this felt...right. They were partners, however short the duration. Stretching, she felt like a languid cat. Sated and...content. Happy, even.

She glanced over at him, her heart full. He slept on his side, with one arm around her. Letting her gaze drift over him, she drank in the sight of him. Lean and muscular, with chiseled features and thick, golden hair. She hadn’t realized his lashes were so long. She’d never met a man so masculine, so rugged and yet so darn beautiful. Beautiful. She almost snorted, because that wasn’t a word she’d ever thought would apply to any man. In Micah’s case, it did, though she suspected he’d be appalled if he knew.

They’d made love, this time slow and leisurely, and he’d brought her to orgasm over and over before allowing himself to experience his own release. After, he’d held her close. They’d snuggled and talked for hours before finally dozing off in each other’s arms, only to wake up and do it all over again.

His touch had been both gentle and rough, his body both pliant and hard. Everything about him excited her, including the way he acted as if he felt the same about her.

In her entire life, she’d never had a night like this, with a man like this one. Which definitely said a lot about her poor choice in men. The thought made her grimace. Before Micah, she hadn’t known such closeness was even possible. Now, she knew she could never settle for anything less ever again.

Trying to figure out if she could manage to squirm out from under his arm without waking him, she glanced at the clock on the nightstand. “Eight o’clock!” she said, shocked. “Micah, wake up. We have meetings this morning.”

She had to give him credit for his rapid comprehension. He went from sound asleep to wide-awake in an instant, jumping from her bed fully naked and rushing off for his own bathroom. A moment later, she heard his shower start.

As she swung her legs over the side of the bed to go do the same, his phone pinged. She realized he’d left it on the nightstand. She shouldn’t look, she knew, but she reached for it anyway.

The text was from someone designated by an initial rather than name. L. Which had to be her sister, Laney.

Call me when you can, it said. I have some news.

Heart pounding, she set the phone back on the nightstand and rushed off to take her own shower. It wasn’t until she stood under the water shampooing her hair that she realized she should have jotted down the phone number.

Racing through her shower in record time, she wrapped a towel around herself and another around her hair and rushed back into her bedroom. The phone was gone. Clearly, he’d already retrieved it. Which was probably all for the best.

Disgusted with herself, she marched back into her bathroom and began blow-drying her hair.
