Chapter Ten
“We’re here, ladies,” said Jameson, Cassy’s father’s driver, as he opened the back door of the Lincoln town car.
“Thank you, Jameson,” Cassy said. Jameson had been Erik Johnson’s personal driver since Cassy was a toddler. Jameson had been the one to drive Cassy to and from school. He was more like an uncle to her than anything else.
“Yeah, thanks, Jameson,” Morgan murmured.
“Any time, girls. Enjoy the party.”
The girls waited until he pulled away before they spoke. “So are Liam and Ava already here?” Morgan asked.
Cassy, who was looking at her phone, nodded. “Ava texted me saying they were doing a perimeter check. She said they’ll meet us inside.”
Morgan nodded and put on her emerald green mask. Cassy took in her best friend. Her fire red locks were in curls down her back. Her dress, which was the same emerald green as her mask, was a single strap, floor length beauty. The single strap went over her right shoulder and was thick with jewels at the top. Above her left hip was diamond pendant that looked to be holding part of her dress up. The slit on the bottom of the left side of her dress revealed her creamy leg. On her feet were three inch silver heels with crossing straps, giving her the height she needed- though she still didn’t pass Cassy. Her dress was stunning, but nowhere near as stunning as her mask.
Her green and silver colored mask sparkled with glitter, which surrounded the eyes and was on every silver swirl that decorated the mask. Green at the bottom and top of the mask and silver in the middle, the glitter surrounding the eyes was green. A long rounded point was on the right side of the mask and alongside it was a multitude of green feathers. Altogether, Cassy’s best friend looked stunning.
“Come on,” she said, pulling Cassy from her staring. “Let’s get inside before we give the wolves a heart attack.”
Cassy laughed. “Yeah, I want to see my parents.”
The girls made their way into the lobby of the Royal Sonesta Hotel. The old renaissance feeling inside belied the outside’s French Quarter look. The multiple archways and pillars continued all the way down the hall towards the elevator. The hotel manager, Daniel Haralson, nodded at them as they walked by. “Hello, Miss Johnson. Miss Reed.”
“Hello, Mr. Haralson,” they replied. Erik Johnson had held every masquerade ball at the Royal Sonesta Hotel over the last twenty years. The Johnson and Reed families were on a first name basis with most of the hotel’s staff.
“You’re both looking lovely tonight. I hope college is going well,” he said, walking alongside them to the elevator.
“Thank you. It’s going extremely well,” Morgan said. She was always better at small talk. Cassy usually hated it. She’d rather people just got to the point.
He nodded. Once they reached the elevator, he pushed the up button for them. “Well, enjoy the party. I’m sure your father held nothing back.”
Cassy forced a smile. “Thanks, Mr. Haralson. We will.
