Luz could feel Nadia’s foot bouncing under the table. Nadia’s hands shook and her eyes darted all over the apartment. Luz had watched the woman drink four cups of coffee with three big scoops of sugar in each.

“The church is involved,” Nadia said, reading over Luz’s notes. “From the parking lot to the preacher, there’s a connection. You should go on Sunday.”

“He’s suspicious of me.”

“It’s a public place. You could blend in,” Nadia said. “And the girl? What did she say? One and a half miles? From the church or the lot?”

“I don’t know.”

“We need a map,” Nadia said.

“I bought one.” Luz dug the map out of her purse.

“And a pen?” Nadia asked. “Where was the parking lot?”

Luz handed a pen to Nadia. She pointed out the lot and church on the map. Nadia put small Xs on the locations.

“Do you have a pushpin and some string?” Nadia asked.
