This is how you are to know God. You must seek Him for yourself. Your pastor can’t be in the middle of your relationship with the Lord! I believe in having pastors and mentors and apostles and spiritual fathers and mothers, but you must know His voice just like you know your own. That will only come through time spent with Him and training your spiritual ear and spirit to be sensitive to how He moves and how He communicates with you.

The beautiful thing is, the journey of knowing Him on this earth is never going to stop! He takes us from glory to glory. Just when you think you’ve figured Him out, He shows another side to His majesty and beauty. That’s why David says in Psalm 27:4 (NKJV), “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord….” He’s saying, God, I just want to look at You and see all there is to see about You.

Knowing Truth Sets You Free

To know God is the beginning of knowing who you are. People the world over are searching for answers to why they are here, who they are, and what is their purpose—but without first knowing God our Father, their pursuit is an endless maze leading to nothing.

John 1:1 (NJKV) says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” This verse is talking about Jesus being the Word and being with God and being God! I love how John 1:14 says, “The Word became flesh and made [Jesus] dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 4:24 says, “God is spirit”—again, stop right there. His Holy Spirit is the third member of this beautiful Trinity. He is the One who is with us here on earth, both the Father and the Son are in heaven. He is not vapor, He is a person.

What actually makes a person? The person’s spirit, not the body. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus and the Spirit of God. He is so precious that the Father and the Son both protect Their Spirit. The Bible says not to grieve the Holy Spirit, it doesn’t say not to grieve Jesus or Father God, but specifically the Holy Spirit. Jesus Himself declares in
