Chapter Ten

“Tell me about your dream,” said Tara, anxious to hear more. Was it possible Aashi had seen her talking to the boy with hair of fire? It couldn’t be. But how had she known otherwise?

“I told you about it already,” said Aashi, shrinking back into her bed.

“No, you didn’t. You told me nothing. I want to know every detail.” Her tone was harsh despite the effort she was putting into sounding calm.

“Please don’t be cross with me, Tara,” she said, seeming to be trying to work out how she’d managed to upset her sister.

“I’m not cross. I promise. You just surprised me, that’s all.” She tried to coat her words with enough sugar to make them convincing. If Aashi got scared she’d tell her nothing and she really needed to hear about the dream. “I think your dream might be important. Would you tell me about it?”

She nodded. “First, I saw you running. You looked so beautiful, but you looked sad, too. You scared me. I wanted to help you, but I couldn’t. I wasn’t there, you see. I was just watching. Then I saw the prince. I saw him see you. You looked at each other and I was screaming out in my dream for him to help you. I was begging him. Then he gave you something. Money, I think. And I was calling out to you to stay with him, but you didn’t. You started running again.”

“Then what? What did the boy do?” She was still wondering if he’d chased after her or stood and watched her leave.

“I don’t know. I must’ve woken up.”

Tara sat on the edge of the bed and tried to take in what she’d just been told. Aashi had been there. She’d seen her. What did that make her? Some kind of witch? A fortuneteller?

“Have you had dreams like this before?” she asked.

Aashi nodded.

“I need you to listen to me. It’s very important. Don’t tell anyone about these dreams. Only me. Do you understand? I don’t want anyone taking you away from me.”

“Why would they take me away?” The fear in her eyes intensified.

“Because your kind of dreaming is special dreaming. People won’t understand. They’ll want to ask you lots of questions if they find out.” She knew she was being paranoid, but there was no way she was going to risk Aashi being taken away from her for one of those medical studies she’d heard rumors about. This secret of Aashi’s was best kept exactly that—a secret.

“Why’s my dreaming special?”

Tara held out her hand and showed Aashi the folded notes. “You dream was real. You did see me. I was running. The boy did give me money. I don’t know how, but you saw it all.”

Aashi smiled. “We’re rich,” she whispered. “I knew he’d save us.”

“He hasn’t saved us. He’s helped us, but this money won’t last forever. It’s enough to feed us for a while, that’s all.”

Her eyes lit up at the mention of food.

“I’m so sorry, Aashi.”

“Why?” She reached for Tara’s hand.
