I finally returned to school the next day, not ‘cause I cared about studying or anything, but only ’cause I wanted to find out anything I could. Whatever had happened to her, happened right here at AHS. The murderer could be anyone roaming these halls.

The atmosphere was tense and gloomy. For the most part, everybody just stayed quiet, kept their noses down, and worked on homework. Even Yoshida-sensei’s class was less of a zoo than usual. During period breaks, I drilled my classmates in 1-3 with questions about that night: where were they, what were they doing, did they see or hear anything weird…the usual detective-style questions. I scribbled notes and kept tabs on as many students as I could. So far, they all had air-tight or pretty solid alibis.

Apparently, somebody didn’t like my attempts at amateur sleuthing and complained to Furukawa-sensei. I’d just finished lunch (no cucumbers today) when his voice echoed over the PA system: “Alice Pachari Kamiya, please come to the staff room as soon as possible. I repeat…”

I finished my last few bites of gyōza1 and hurried to the staff room on the ground floor. I knocked twice, slid open the door, and stepped in.

“What’re you doing?” Furukawa-sensei barked, his hairy hands catching the door. “Get out and start over. Do it right.”

I sighed, stepped outside, then stood at the doorway and bowed. “Excuse me. Alice Pachari Kamiya from Class 1-3. I have come to speak with Furukawa-sensei.”

He waved me in. I repeated “excuse me” and walked slowly over to his desk. He sat across from Mr. Brown, who was sipping a Coke, wearing huge earphones, and playing some kind of puzzle game on the computer. Furukawa-sensei sank into his rolling chair, but made me stand.

“So, Kamiya,” he said, unwrapping a senbei rice cracker, “I hear you’ve been pestering the other students with questions about the incident. Is that true?”

“Yes, Sensei.”

He bit into the cracker and kept speaking. I couldn’t understand a word of it.

“Sorry, Sensei, can you repeat that?”

“You do realize,” he repeated, having swallowed a bite, “they’ve already been asked all those same questions by the police, don’t you?”

“Yes, but Sensei, maybe the police missed an important detail. What if they—”

He held a hand out to signal for me to shut up. “That’s not your place, Kamiya. Let the police do their job. They’re the professionals and the adults. Their job is to figure out what happened, track down the person responsible, and bring them to justice. You’re a high school student, and a child. Your job right now is to focus on your studies and get high marks on your tests.”

“I’m not a—”

“I mean it. Look, I know you and Kobayashi were close, but you’re not the only one affected by her loss. We’re all stressed and going through a tough time right now. Just between you and me, even though I only had her in my class a short time, she was one of the finest students I’ve ever known. I share
