Hue made her eyes stay on her grandmotherâs.
âWhat do you mean, you had a dream?â she asked.
âA vision from Felestre,â Regina said, pouring herself and Hue tea. âHe said there is a way to restore our magic.â
Did he tell you why he decided to let it fade?
The question remained unasked. The years had taught Hue just how far she could go. Yet, she wondered. Was it because of her? Her mother? Was it because she could not inherit the powers? Because her father was a landdweller? Somehow, she couldnât think Felestre would object to a union of magic souls, and the lords of Whitecrest were ever beloved of him. She didnât know much about the landdwellers anymore since her grandmother had forbidden the knowledge, but news of the death of the Lord of Whitecrest had reached even them. Her father. She swallowed her bitterness along with her anger and grief.
Perhaps he wouldnât have loved me either.
âSo, what do we need to do?â Hue asked.
âNothing right now.â Regina smiled at her, sipping her tea. âI will be announcing it in the court. We will need volunteers for the task He has set us.â
âI can do it,â Hue said as she picked up her own tea. Her magic had always been weaker than the rest of her familyâs, but that didnât mean she was useless. She was the best warrior they had, and the protectors had always liked her more than the others.
âIâm sure.â Regina smiled, reminding Hue somehow of a shark.
I shouldnât think like that.
Regina had never been warm or affectionate. Not for years now. Hue knew that it had started the day she had turned twenty. Even now, after sixteen years, Hue had no idea why the power didnât come to her. Whatever the reasons, it hadnât happened, and her grandmother had suddenly become this stranger.
Her grandfather had tried for a few years, but Hue could see his disappointment as well. Somehow, she had let them down both, and she didnât even know what she had done, what she could have done. It had felt like magic itself had rejected her, and the only family she had was now lost. Even Kenilaâs attitude had changed after that, become condescending and sharp, but Hue still held on to her because at least Kenila still talked to her.
She hadnât thought of her grandparents as anything other than Berthold and Regina for a few years now. Hue tried to love them, to remember everything they had done for her since her motherâs death. Harde had been nineteen when she had died, and though her grandparents had kept her from her father, they had still raised her, cared for her, though she was a landdwellerâs daughter.
For a while now, Hue had accepted that her grandparents werenât really capable of love as she understood it. She still tried to be grateful. After all, they had let her live with them when they refused to let any of their other children or grandchildren even visit except for court.
