Chapter Eleven

Remy woke the next morning to a bright Colorado sky and another text from Wyatt. Any chance I can drop off Samson an hour early for Puppy School?

She read the text twice before answering. Trouble in Dodge City?

Just a few details that need tying up. Shouldn’t take long.

She tried to read between the lines. Last night he’d mentioned teenagers and irresponsible parents. Remy’s heart squeezed with worry. She prayed no one had been hurt. Drop him off at the clinic any time before noon.

When Wyatt showed up ten minutes before the deadline, he was dressed in regular clothes. He’d paired dark jeans with a light green long-sleeve button-down dress shirt. He looked good in business-casual clothing. He also looked exhausted. “You get any sleep last night?” she asked him.

The question earned her a ghost of a smile. “A couple hours.”

“I slept really well,” Samson told her, wrapping his arms around her waist in a fierce hug.

She held on to him tight for several seconds, wishing she never had to let go. She was really starting to care for this kid. “That makes two of us.”

Samson grinned up at her as he shuffled out of her arms. “I can’t wait for Puppy School today. Do I get to train Roscoe again?”

Remy had to think, then remembered that was the name he’d given the puppy Casey had loaned him for class last week. “I don’t see why not. You did such a nice job with him last time.”

“I really like Roscoe. I should maybe practice with him this week.” He spared his uncle a quick, hopeful glance. “Puppies learn best when they practice.”

Wyatt didn’t respond. Remy thought maybe she detected a slight exhalation. His version of a sigh. “I better get moving.” He slid Remy a look. “I’ll try to get out to your ranch by three.”

“Whatever works.”

He didn’t say anything, just pulled his sunglasses out of his front pocket and placed them on his face, the move hiding his eyes. “Don’t you have stuff to do for the party tonight?”

“What party?” Samson asked before she could answer.

“My family and a bunch of our friends are getting together to celebrate my brother’s engagement. He’s marrying Harper and Kennedy’s aunt Hope.”

Samson seemed to think that over, then said, “Do I get to come, too?”

“I’m pretty sure you were invited.” She glanced at Wyatt for confirmation. “Right?”

“We were invited.”

She arched a brow. “And...?”

“And—” he gave her a small smile “—we’ll be there.”

Samson’s excited whoop spoke for itself.

It became clear on the drive out to Remy’s ranch that Wyatt hadn’t told the boy about the party. Typical man, she thought. Samson had a million questions. He wanted to know who would be at the party. What kind of food they would be eating. “Will we get to play games?”

“I’m sure there will be lots of outdoor games,” she said, “Volleyball, for sure.” This seemed to satisfy him.

The next few hours went by in a blur. At Puppy School, Remy taught the children how to lure the puppies around with no commands, just food.
