Chapter 6

Two hours later, he looked again at his watch. He’d sent a servant to wake his lovely fiancée and she should be here by now. The formal dinner was the last of the pre-wedding rituals and he eagerly wanted to get this over with so he could take his almost-wife to bed again tonight. Surprisingly, Jabril was already feeling the need to possess her incredible body once more despite the fact that he’d enjoyed her twice just hours ago. She might be fighting the feelings that were obvious, but he wasn’t so blind. He was more than willing to accept that he was going to have a very enjoyable marriage.

When she stepped into the room that was filled with wedding guests, she took his breath away. Somehow, she’d managed to pile all that thick, lovely hair onto her head, looking very sophisticated and reserved. Her dress hugged her figure, but not overtly and he appreciated that he would be the only man to know her curves intimately.

He watched her carefully, waiting for her eyes to find him. The moment she found him, he saw exactly what he wanted. She’d frozen, her body stiffening with recognition. And need. He walked over to her, imprisoning her eyes with his own, not letting her see any other person in the room. When he was less than a foot away, he extended his hand, almost chuckling when she hid both of hers behind her back. “Did you sleep well?” he whispered in her ear.

Laila wanted to slap the victorious grin off of his face but she didn’t dare. She’d wait until they were in private to tell him not to look at her like that in the future. She wasn’t a possession. She was a living, breathing human being and she didn’t like that look, not one little bit.

She trembled when he took her hand from behind her back and placed it firmly on his arm. When he looked down at her, he smiled gently. “Still nervous around me, little one?”

She desperately wanted to pull away from him, but also wanted to curl up in his arms and have him tell her that everything would be okay, that he wouldn’t cheat on her and have mistresses tucked away in convenient places. But that was a fantasy, not real life.

“I’m not little,” she defended, then glanced up at him and shook her head. “Well, I guess I am compared to you. And I’m not nervous.” Okay, so that was a complete lie but she didn’t care. Self-preservation was very important to her.

“There are some people I’d like you to meet,” he said and led her through the throng of guests, most of which were family or close friends. She enjoyed her time with him that night, mostly because everyone tried to put her at ease. They were a warm, generous family and she was surprised that there wasn’t the in-fighting and competition among the members. Most royal families were all eager to have their own power, cutting others off at the knees.
