2.7 Scene of the Yangzhou riot
The Prefect promised an answer which they received on the following day. It was an evasive reply and even facetious, but ended with, ‘I will command the (xian magistrate) to put out proclamations in accordance with the (daotai’s) dispatch prohibiting these things.’44
The same day some of the better disposed people forewarned us [in an anonymous letter] that a riot might be expected on the morrow and advised our immediately adopting every precaution to avoid collision with the people. We at once built up as many of the entrances to the house as possible and placing two large chairs across the passage which leads from the street to the house [plan, H] two of us seated ourselves on them and so closed the way. A crowd of from one hundred to two hundred persons was assembled; and from time to time we addressed them, with the effect of preventing any actual breach of the peace. Moreover we did a few days before engage two of the (dibao’s) assistants as doorkeepers, who were of some help in soothing the people.
In the evening George Duncan called in on his way from Nanjing to Shanghai to meet his bride. He had to force his way through the crowd at the gates, to find Hudson Taylor ‘just up from a sickbed’ facing the mob and by the force of personality and ‘that remarkable tact which God has given him’ holding them at bay. ‘Being a fluent speaker of Mandarin, and at the same time a man of great courage and self-possession,’ Duncan’s arrival was most opportune, Emily observed. ‘You can imagine how grateful Mr Taylor felt when he consented to waive his intended journey and stand by us in our peril.’
With the danger increasing, Hudson Taylor proposed to send the women and children to Silver Island. ‘With one consent we (women) begged him not to do so,’ Maria was to recall. ‘For us to have gone away at that juncture would probably have been to increase to those that remained any danger that there might be.’ But there was little the women could do to help, so Emily took advantage of a lull to write with characteristic verve to Mrs Berger.
Mr Taylor was boasting of God’s care for us to (Mr Peng) of the hotel, who helped us to get this house. The poor man came to us late on Saturday night in great fright. He told us that our present landlord was going to remove his family away from the premises at dawn on account of the expected riot on the morrow. For himself he said he could only depend upon Mr Taylor. Mr Taylor told him he depended upon God; and told him to see whether God would not protect us that we were on His business, and He would not have us in danger, and added ‘Wait and see, and if God does not preserve us, never trust me again or believe my words.’ What an irresistible power is in God’s truth! for that heathen man .
