When the walls of Lighura came into view in the far distance, Eugenie’s mare was foaming. The trembling underneath Eugenie felt like an earthquake, and she feared the animal would collapse before they could reach their destination.

This did nothing to quell the storm raging in Eugenie’s stomach.

It’s just nerves, she tried to convince herself. But the closer they came to the Lighuran border, the more her stomach rebelled. Sweat poured down her sides beneath her Examiner’s robes, and her breathing came almost to a standstill. Colors bled together before her eyes until the road that lay ahead of them was nothing but a blur. She closed her eyes and pushed the mare forward.

Moments from the stone gate marking the outer edge of the village, Eugenie yanked on the reigns for dear life and tumbled off the horse.

“Gin!”

Asha was right behind her, in time to pull her plaited hair back as Eugenie expelled the meager contents of her stomach and produced a black, rancid stain in the dirt.

“Are you alright?”

Eugenie didn’t answer. She clung to Asha’s robes and prayed the world would just stand still.

“You’ve got to stop this,” Asha urged. “Look at what it’s doing to you!”

“That’s not it…”

When at last Eugenie opened her eyes, the sight of the village wall, or more precisely, what she saw beneath its Faelsday decorations, set her mind to shrieking. She couldn’t bear to look at it, to face the ravenous void eating away at the village’s core.

Asha didn’t want to admit it, even to herself, but Eugenie’s wild-eyed fear was contagious.

“What do you see?” she whispered.

“Something’s wrong. Something’s very, very wrong.”
