Later that afternoon, Clark reclined on a couch in his office while sifting through the papers Marcott had put together for him. While the president had some basic knowledge when it came to deciphering research papers, the report on the Genius trials seemed like it was written in an alien language. He sighed and then dropped the papers on his lap before rubbing his face with both hands.

“None of this makes sense,” he said aloud to himself.

Moments later, he placed the folder on the end table and stood, relieved by the interruption. He was ready to pass off the papers to his communications team so they could assemble some talking points for upcoming press conferences.

When he opened the door, he found Tom Ackerman, his chief of staff, standing in the hall, his arms cradling a stack of papers. Ackerman eyed Clark for a few seconds before saying a word.

“Did you forget about our meeting this afternoon?” Ackerman asked.

“Was it on the schedule?”

“It was on mine.”

“Sorry, I must’ve let the time get away from me,” Clark said, gesturing for Ackerman to enter the room. “I was reading this FDA report that Paul Marcott gave me about Genius and—well, it’s a slog, if I’m being honest.”

Ackerman chuckled and glanced down at the papers he was carrying. “You’re laboring to get through a government report? Color me shocked.”

“Do you speak any other language but sarcasm?”

Ackerman dropped his stack of documents on one of the chairs and then snatched the FDA report off the end table. “I speak it because it’s a universal language.”

“Well, sarcasm aside, if you can help me make sense of this, I’d appreciate it because I might as well be trying to read Sanskrit on a cave in the dark.”

Ackerman flipped open the folder and eased into an open chair. His brow furrowed as his eyes scanned the pages. After a couple of minutes, he snapped the file shut and dropped it on the end table.

“What’s that look for?” Clark asked.

“Can you tell me why you’re reading this?”

“Paul told me the FDA is about to announce approval for Genius.”

“No, no, no,” Ackerman said, shaking his head. “You can’t let them do that.”

“Why not?”

“Did you read this?”

“Yeah, but I told you it doesn’t make any sense to me.”

“That’s by design,” Ackerman said. “He’s trying to pull a fast one. He wants this trial to look legit, but Paul is definitely skewing the results. If this was a financial report, I’d say he was cooking the books.”

“Are you sure?”

Ackerman nodded. “And there’s something else you need to know about Genius—and it’s not good.”
