CHAPTER EIGHT

THE SUPER COMPUTER

“Good!” Abna exclaimed, breathing hard. “We’ve done it!” He stood looking in satisfaction on the twenty feet or so of extra length that had been uprooted—making a seventy-foot pillar of copper in all.

“That’s all we need,” the Amazon said, likewise surveying. “The best conductor of lightning ever made. The sooner we transport it back to that door, the better.”

They paused only long enough to get their breath back after their labors, then they began the task of hauling the copper pillar on to their shoulders. Marita was too small to take part—and in any case she was to be their guide. Supplied with the detector that Abna had formerly carried, she led the way as the heavy burden was borne along.

The actual arranging of the post was not difficult. The Amazon herself directed operations, as well as doing most of the hard work. To plant the post was not nearly such a tough task as carrying it through the jungle. It was only sunk to a depth of two feet, after which its own weight bedded it down. It lay at an angle, flush with the door, its topmost point rearing up in a solitary splendor.

“That’s that,” the Amazon said finally. “For the first time we really want a storm, which is probably a good reason why there won’t be one for a long time.”

But in that assumption she was wrong. About two hours later, when the five were resting from their exertions and enjoying some of the inevitable fruits for nourishment, there stole a darkness over the face of things. The Amazon glanced up quickly.

“Here we go,” she commented briefly. “And we’d better find shelter. Looks as though this one’s going to be a good one.”

Suddenly, with the blinding abruptness that characterized all things on this strange planet, the storm broke. Lightning waterfalled down the sky some distance away, and the ground smoked and heaved where it struck. Thunder rolled and detonated, but the distance was still considerable. But not for long. In the space of seconds the fury built up to maximum as the heavens fully discharged their load.

Yet another flash came, and even another, the ground shaking almost incessantly now under the unimaginable din. The five winced at the noise and shut their eyes to the incessant dazzle—until they suddenly realized there wasn’t anything anymore. As usual, the storm had gone as though it had never been, leaving a quagmire of mud and newly created lakes.

“I couldn’t exactly see what happened, but I believe we’ve done it!” Abna exclaimed. “The rain hid the view—”

He scrambled quickly to his feet and slopped through the mud to the edge of the crater, the others coming after him. In the growing light of the after-storm they gazed in delight upon the vision they had hoped to see.

The pillar was gone—that they had known—but the mighty door had also been partially fused into molten metal. Not all of it had been destroyed—even by that terrific flash of lightning—but enough had been melted away to make ingress a possibility.
