“Time to celebrate,” Abattoir said.

“Let’s do something when we get back to Dublin.” Clooney spotted a taxi. “For now, we should stay out of sight.”

“John, no one cares about us. Besides, we just took down the biggest drug dealer in the Americas and it would be a crime against humanity to leave Kentucky without sampling its finest whiskey.”

“I love American whiskey,” Chardonnay added.

“I know a place.” Abattoir flagged down the taxi and had the driver take them to Market Street.

Wort’s had a whiskey menu that was over a dozen pages long. The most efficient way to explore it was for each of them to order a flight of three bourbons and pass their Glencairn glasses around. Clooney knew that he should smell the whiskey before sipping and that he should add a straw of water to open it up, but he lacked to vocabulary to describe what he tasted.

“I’m getting hints of caramel, leather, and shortbread.” Abattoir passed his glass to Chardonnay.

“To me, it tastes like tobacco and chocolate.”

“I can’t describe it,” Clooney said when it was his turn, “except to say that its delicious.”

He followed when Abattoir got up to use the men’s room.

“Do you have something going on with her?” Clooney parked himself at the urinal next to Abattoir’s.

“What are you talking about?”

“It’s just the way you rushed to her defense outside the bowling alley.”

“I’m gaining her confidence,” Abattoir said. “You won’t believe the things she told me.”

Clooney didn’t.

“As a young woman, she auditioned to become a fashion model in Gdansk. It wasn’t a modeling firm at all but a front for Havarti’s syndicate. They kidnapped her, brutalized her, and forced her to take their ‘treatment.’ The syndicate punished disobedience with reprisals against the victims’ families. Chardonnay’s best friend’s brother was gunned down in broad daylight. She’s really the victim here.”

“So, what’s your plan?” Clooney zipped up, flushed, and moved to the sink.

“I’ll keep working on her. I’ve offered a new identity but she won’t budge unless we get her family out of danger,” Abattoir said as he followed.

“Don’t make any promises just yet.” Clooney soaped his hands and ran them under the tap. “I’ll ask Langley about her family.” Clooney dried his hands on a paper towel. “And Danny, be careful.”
