Chapter 26

Gritt sat in the back of Chang’s limo as he, Chang and Jana Taylor watched the Grumman Gulfstream taxi from the runway at Andrews Air Force Base. They remained seated as the two pilots and the male steward departed the plane and disappeared into the waiting area. Chang tapped his driver on the shoulder. The lavishly equipped black Chevy Suburban, pulled to the bottom of the air stairs and the three slid from the back, all wearing stocking caps pulled low and sunglasses. A moment later they were inside where they found Thad Walker already seated at a small conference table.

Chang watched Thad reach for his cane. “Don’t get up,” ordered Chang. He stood across from the old pro and extended his hand. “Nice to see you again, my friend. You know Chad well, and you remember director Taylor.”

Thad smiled at each as he shook hands. “What more do you have on this Nader thing?” he asked.

“Nothing more on Nader,” replied Jana, “but the Washington Post is reporting that they have a letter that was somehow spirited out of Tehran. It appears to them to be authentic, and it supposedly discusses some major strike at America for destroying their maritime facility. The Post is claiming they got it from a critical source that they have worked with for years and so far, have refused to give us a copy.”

“I won’t divulge how we will get it, but I expect to have a copy by tonight,” said Chang.

“Iran is a beautiful country,” replied Thad, “but the politics there have been a shithole since the ‘60s. I’m told that the internal politics are just as messy.”

“I thought you had finally retired, you know rowing your boat and training your dog for pheasant hunting,” commented Chang with a laugh.

“You know better than that,” offered Thad, “or you wouldn’t call me about once a year when you need an old head on a new problem.”

“Don’t blame us,” said Chang. “The last crisis was all because Gritt here couldn’t ignore an impossible line of unrelated things that turned out to be a major problem.”

“How you been?” asked Thad as he turned to Gritt. “When we get this all figured out, you and the director need to set aside some time to go do a little fall fishing and some bird hunting with me. I like Chang being there. With his security detail around we move by helicopter. We can cover a lot more country in the couple of days he gives me each year.”

“I’m in,” said Chad. “How long a drive is it from Flathead Lake to North Dakota?”

“An easy day,” replied Thad. “Mostly open highway with little traffic after the tourists get their motorhomes off the road for the season. How is Olga?”

“Just great, happy to be a bit closer. She’s staying at my place in Georgetown, and if we wrap this up fast enough, maybe we will get a couple more days together before she leaves.”

“Okay, enough of this,” said Jana. “The three of us were chatting while we waited.
