Back at the La Fonda, Ellen went to the business center to print the images she’d taken of some of the more interesting and relevant pages from Chuck Jensen’s memoir. Then she met Sue and Tanya upstairs in Sue’s room to go over them together.

“These photos are hard to read, even printed out,” Ellen said once she was seated in a club chair across from her friends. “And Chuck’s handwriting becomes more erratic toward the end. On the last few pages, he talks about his regrets. He says, ‘I should have spent more time with Dorothy and the kids while I had a chance. I should have been a better father to Stephen. Maybe he’d still be alive.’ I wonder if Stephen died at Suicide Bridge.”

“Maybe Teresa Castillo knows,” Tanya suggested.

“The last page doesn’t even look like it was written by the same person,” Ellen said. “And maybe it wasn’t. It says, ‘Chuck is gone. He’s mine and won’t be coming back.’”

Sue’s eye widened. “That sounds like the Shinigami.”

“Do you think Chuck killed himself on Suicide Bridge?” Tanya asked.

Ellen nodded. “Sounds like it. We should ask Teresa to confirm it.”
