Monterrey, Mexico

Lincoln used tweezers to pull glass shards from Simone's arm and shoulder.

Clear glass, brown, and green. Simone thought she must have hit the mirror and fallen onto whatever liquor bottles had been stored below and crushed them. At the time she hadn't felt any pain, but the adrenaline was long gone and the prodding of her flesh felt like an experiment in torture.

They had to avoid hospitals in case Felix had indeed tipped off the authorities in Monterrey. The minute any of the three team members checked in, a crooked cop would know and that would mean the end of the hunt.

They hid out in a tiny motel that April knew of. The owner wouldn't ask questions as much of his side business fell outside of Mexican law. Simone didn't ask what it was that he did on the side.

“There's quite a bit in there,” Lincoln said. “I'm not sure I can get it all.”

Blood ran down Simone's arm, over her elbow, across her wrist, and dripped from the tips of her fingers. She could make a fist and flex her joints, so she knew there was no serious tendon or muscle damage. “I can do it,” she said, holding her clean hand out to Lincoln.

He gave her the tweezers and she went to work on extracting the tougher glass fragments from deep within her flesh.

Lincoln had taken a bullet to the thigh but it merely grazed him. April suffered burns on both arms and her back but nothing too severe. She was more worried about the singed ends of her wavy locks. All three were lucky to get out of there at all, Simone thought as she carefully worked the metal tool inside a particular lasceration on her upper shoulder.

“Now what?” April stood in the bathroom doorway drying her hair with a towel. She'd stood under cool water for several minutes to ease the pain from her burns.

“We have to report back to Clark,” Lincoln said. “Update our progress.”

“That's a waste of time,” April said with express disagreement. “Every minute we spend here is a minute we could be working to rescue Esteban, if he's not dead already. I worked with him for months. I'm not going to just leave him to die.”

“We don't have intel. What do you suggest we do, run around the city to all thirty-something libraries and hope we get lucky?”

“I don't need a lecture, Lincoln.”

“Enough!” Simone's word was punctuated with finality. She didn't like to raise her voice, but when she did, people listened. Her hand was frozen in the process of extracting a large glass shard from her upper arm. “I can't think with you two yelling. Figure out what we have to do and just do it, okay?”

Lincoln went for the door. “I'll make the call.”

A moment of decompression passed after he was gone. A stillness returned to the room. Finally, Simone was able to get the most significant pieces of glass removed from her arm.

“Let me help,” April said, bringing a medkit to the bed.
