Chapter 13

Ishould have expected Gianna to slam the door in my face. I couldn’t blame her. Who was I to show up and ask about pictures of roses? I couldn’t even tell her it was because it might free her brother because I didn’t know that to be true.

I walked back to my car, the chill of the shade sliding under my hoodie and caressing my bare skin. Goosebumps stood erect, warning me of something to come but what that was, I couldn’t even guess. I almost felt bad for Gianna, living on the outskirts of town in a crumbling manor that couldn’t escape the tentacles of time.

Once I got inside, I drove home and showered. I pulled out my journal and jotted down my day but nothing was sparking ideas, nothing that teased out a solution the way it sometimes did. I ate dinner with my dad and headed back to my room. It wasn’t long before I fell asleep.

It could have been minutes, it could have been hours, but the second I heard the pebble tap against my window, I was wide awake. I hadn’t even changed into pajamas, so my uniform pants pressed tightly against my skin and my white undershirt was wrinkled. I ruffled my hair, trying to push the loose strands out of my face. I stifled a yawn as I pushed the curtains to the side and nearly let out a shout of surprise.

There, waiting down in front of the pool, was none other than Rumpelstiltskin himself. He looked out of place, standing in front of hedges that needed to be trimmed, the scent of weeds mixed with chlorine wafting across the makeshift rectangle causing my stomach to churn. He didn’t seem perturbed by it at all. In fact, he wore his charming smile like a badge, dark eyes sparkling with mischief. Despite the darkness that shrouded him, he looked like he was ready to take on the night with a zest I wasn’t particularly feeling and wasn’t sure I had ever felt before.

“Shall I ask you to let down your hair?” he asked.

“I think you have me confused with someone else.”

Without warning, Rumple disappeared into the night and reappeared inside my room. I stumbled back to my bed, my heart pounding against my chest. I couldn’t believe what I had just seen. It didn’t make any sense. Teleportation didn’t exist.

Unless…

“Was that ShadowMagic?” I asked in a fervent whisper. I was glad I still had the sense to think about my dad after what I had just seen.

Rumple winked but said nothing. Instead, he reached into his blazer pocket and pulled out a silk handkerchief. He wiped his hands and replaced it.

“You’re not supposed to do that here,” I said. I didn’t know why I said that at all. Of course he knew about the laws regarding ShadowMagic. And of course he didn’t seem to care. As an Imp from the fairy realm, his rules didn’t coincide with ours. ShadowMagic was much more common
