CHAPTER XXIV

~~~~~~Nydia~~~~~~~
The typical southern early spring had officially arrived. The past two weeks have been cool in the morning and balmy in the afternoon with trees wearing a bright green and blossoms everywhere. Dad had made attempts to spend more time with me these past two weeks, but he’s been traveling around the region selling and trading mostly. He did give me the gaudy necklace Lillian was wearing. Apparently he ordered two of them and the brown was meant for me, and Lillian’s was being special ordered. It’s strangely heavy and uncomfortable hanging low and knocking into my stomach.
I’ve mostly been focusing on getting stronger and practicing what Grey has been teaching me; how to break holds if someone grabs me and kicking weak points especially since my arms were still healing from Mattock’s grip. I can’t believe Grey is a raspot. It’s been so nice being able to be open with someone; someone who isn’t scared to talk about anything with me; a person who knows me and doesn’t mind who I am.
I waited outside the house for Grey, who was going to take me to the field on the outskirts of town to meet Mattock. We had talked about it last week and I begrudgingly agreed. I leaned against the cold brick wall of the house as the light of dawn grew. The ground was damp with dew and soaked the edges of my shoes. I leaned my head back and breathed in the fresh air.
“You asleep?”
My eyes flashed open and squinted at Grey walking through the trees and newly sprouted shrubs behind the house and smiled. “No, just waiting on your lazy rear.”
He laughed. “Sorry, I had to convince Mattock to wait for us. How are your arms?” He asked, picking up my pack.
“They’re almost completely better,” I proudly responded, rolling up my sleeves.
“Look at that, you’re not a total twig anymore.” He used his finger and thumb to squeeze my arm. “You actually have a little muscle there now.”
I ripped my arm away as we started walking. “I was never a twig!” He pulled his chin back and looked at me sideways. “I was at least a branch,” I weakly insisted.
He gave me a look that said “Oh yeah? Is that so?” And we laughed it off.
“So, you had to convince him to be okay with meeting me?” I asked
“Well yeah. I think he’s just being stubborn and nervous, but I think it would be good for him to meet you,” he explained, throwing his hands around nervously while explaining.
“Why?” I asked.
“Um it’s just he doesn’t know you, and doesn’t trust you, and it’s really important to him that our plans don’t get disrupted by a short drop and a hard stop,” he laughed even more nervously.
“Huh?” I asked.
“He still thinks you’re a slug. So, he is worried that you still have leverage against me and that you’ll turn me in and I’ll be hung.” I grimaced at the thought. “I think by meeting you, he’d get off my back about ruining our future and be less annoyed when I come to train you.
