Chapter 7

The Garden

It was agreed unanimously that Wendy could return under the conditions set down by Dave. Delighted and happy again, Wendy began her chores and went about furiously clearing up the fallen apple and cherry blossom. All the creatures laughed as she gathered a huge pile only to watch as they blew away continually in the summer breeze. But Wendy stuck to her task, determined to prove that she was worthy of a place in the love garden. Meanwhile, Cyril the centipede had passed a guest list to Colin for his wedding to Mollie Millipede. Dave was handed the paper and read out the names.

“Dave the Robin, oh that’s me, great,” he chirped. “Mrs Dave; Mr and Mrs Blackbird; Sid the spider; Warren the worm; Sammy the snail; Bobby the bee; Archie and his army of Ants; Stan the fat pigeon; Madame Butterfly and the ladybirds; Wendy Woodlouse; Eric the earwig; Clive the caterpillar; Harry House Martin; Jack Sparrow (he was actually christened Simon, but fancied himself as a film star); Belinda Bunny, EB and Betty.”

EB was Nige’s bear, who lived in the house with his girlfriend Betty, a sweet soft cow who belonged to Juliette. Unbeknown to their owners, EB and Betty embarked on many adventures when the house was empty … but that tale is for another time. Dave had a wedding to organise and everyone had a role to play.

Clive was best man, or best caterpillar in this case, Madame Butterfly was maid of honour and the ladybirds made for beautiful bridesmaids in their red and black spotted outfits. Bobby the bee was chief usher, although he had wanted to perform the wedding insisting it had to be someone black and white … and then quickly realised he was black and yellow and got on with the task of usher. Dave was master of ceremonies and would perform the wedding, while Stan took his place as chauffeur and gave the bride and groom a comfortable ride to the garden. Sid had made an altar from his finest silk, Sammy, Wendy and Warren had arranged the flowers and EB was in charge of catering, with honey appearing on the menu quite a bit. Warren looked down the menu: honey supreme, honey on toast, honey sandwiches, honey peanuts, honey crisps, honey surprise, chocolate with a hint of honey, honey with a hint of chocolate, honeyed flies, honey leaves and honey milk!

“Yuk!” said Warren. “Best bring my own cardboard to feast on as I’m not a fan of honey,” and he popped down into one of his many holes, along to his cellar, ate some wet cardboard and promptly fell asleep.

The day was beautiful, the garden was bathed in sunshine, the owners were out and it was time for a creature party. And then out of the blue and under the fence appeared a long lost resident of the garden, it was Henry Hedgehog and his wife Hilda.

“Oh my goodness,” tweeted Dave. “I didn’t think I would ever see you again my friends.
