I heaved a sigh of frustration as I perused the compiled to-do list, "Frost elixir is out- I still have to find a Glacies bufo."
To my disappointment, some of the eggs I acquired from the loot box failed to hatch. After a few days of keeping them in their jar inside my lab, an unpleasant odor began to waft throughout the space. However, both batches of eggs I had placed outside in the snow hatched into tadpoles on the second day.
I had no information on how long it would take for the tadpoles to metamorphose, and even less of an idea as to what they'd grow into. Ideally they'd become Glacies bufo; however, considering Tris's track record in this area, I knew that something more unexpected could happen.
"I've already powdered the slime cores I had, and since mimic experiments are impossible without slimes, those are out of the question." My finger moved to trace over the next items on my list as I spoke.
"Caw!" Zosimos nipped sharply at my ear, and I winced, raising a hand to shield the furry appendage from the crow's wrath.
"Ow, stop!" I scolded, trying to push the bird away. "I didn't know they were actually useful. Besides, Rainy said that boiled cores can't be revived into slimes and are only used to create dye pigments."
Before reading the weathered research notes on mimics, slimes had been an entity that were of little interest to me.
The gelatinous blobs were a familiar sight in the woodlands of Salvia. Slimes were known for their ability to alter colors based upon whatever they ingested, usually taking on hues close to what they ate. In Caruan's forests, green was the most typical shade since that was what vegetation around it tended toward.
Slimes were popular with artisans, as the coloring could be used in paints and fabrics. Some farmers kept them to use on their crops, believing that they warded off pests. However, despite their usefulness, slimes were still mainly viewed as an annoyance by many people who found the creatures' habit of oozing and making gurgling noises annoying.
Initially, when I was told of the slime's capacity to change its hue based on what plants it consumed, I was elated, believing they had the potential to gain alchemic powers through eating specific vegetation.
My hopes were quickly dashed when I discovered that red slimes were fed red amanita mushrooms to get their vibrant coloration.
Apparently many others had the same idea as myself and experimented with feeding alternative herbs to see if they could create potions or tinctures by boiling those slimes. But the unanimous conclusion was that boiling slimes who ate alchemical herbs did not yield any beneficial effects.
What was discovered is that slimes could consume virtually any material, given enough time. This was how gold slimes were created- by providing a slime with pure gold and allowing it to absorb the metal's coloration over an extended period. Interestingly, however, these types of slimes had to be boiled at much higher temperatures than regular specimens in order for the dye to be made.
