Lead Magnets Create Two‐Way Value
The most important part of building up a strong virtual Rolodex is collecting other people's contact information and giving value to them in return. These two processes can be done simultaneously by creating a lead magnet.
A lead magnet is simply an informational resource, such as a how‐to guide, a tip sheet, a free video series, a white paper, or an eBook that's offered to your target audience to determine their interest in a future product or service.
In this way, lead magnets create two‐way value. When it comes to generating leads for an active sales funnel, which we will discuss in later chapters, a lead magnet is a free, information‐based gift that sits at the beginning of the funnel to bring in leads. Very often, lead magnets are loss leaders, which are products given away or sold at a loss to attract customers.
The good news is that if you're creating content consistently, you already have everything you need to create a strong lead magnet.
While there are many types of lead magnets, eBooks are the simplest and most effective magnets to create using the content we've discussed in previous chapters. Creating an eBook is simple because you only need a handful of blog articles to create your first eBook.
By blogging and using your writing to create an eBook, you're killing many birds with a single stone. First, you're adding written content to your venture's website, which is the best way to increase your ranking on Google and other search engines.
Second, you're giving your readers and clients consistent value for free. Third, you're staying in touch with your readers through your content, testing your ideas as well as their needs continuously. Fourth and finally, you're building up a library of content that you can repackage for future initiatives down the road, such as informational products, sales pages, and more.
The first step to creating an eBook is to evaluate which articles people have been reading the most. The best way to evaluate this is with a free third‐party tracking software such as Google Analytics or a most popular box plugin, both of which can be integrated into any current website platform, such as WordPress, SquareSpace, or Weebly.
Many current websites will automatically tell you which pages are being viewed the most.
This unique views metric is all you need to determine how your articles rank in popularity. Once you know the ranking of your blog articles, you can select the top five or so articles you've posted and rework them into an eBook. Here, the key is to fit the pieces under a unified theme.
For example, if you write reviews for different types of products for women. First, ask yourself, “What do all of these products have in common?” If the answer is that all the products are aimed at successful women in leadership positions, then your eBook might be called Living the Lifestyle of a Successful Woman.
If, on the other hand, you write about women who work in corporate careers and
