CHAPTER 13

Josh was growing increasingly frustrated; a week had passed and there was still no sign of Casey and Donnie, or Tibbets.

He had been working around the clock, sometimes sleeping at the station. Nothing. It would appear that they had simply vanished. He could easily understand that Tibbets would be hard to find. If he was still in the Phoenix area he would be stealing license plates and switching. Or, he might have gotten rid of the van, although Josh had a very strong hunch that he had not. The man seemed attached to the thing. Maybe it was because he had committed his crimes in it; or maybe it was that as the only stable element in Tibbets’s disgusting life, it represented security to him. Whatever. At any rate, if he remained cautious and did not commit any traffic violations, he could move about fairly freely, and if he left the state, he might remain free for months or years. The thing that Josh was counting on was Tibbets’s threats. Josh had the impression that carrying out his boasts was a point of honor with Tibbets, and that the man would not rest until he had made good on them. Which had to mean that he had to show up eventually.

The thing that worried Josh the most was the possibility that Tibbets was trailing Casey and Donnie, or that he had — even worse — found them. But he didn’t even want to think about that. Now that Casey was gone, he realized just how much he cared about her, how much he missed her. And Donnie, as well. He was fond of the damned kid.

The only good thing about this mess was, that at least so far, he had received little flack from Captain Randall, or anyone else in the department. Of course, he knew what was in the captain’s mind, as well as the minds of all others with knowledge of the case. If they had pursued Tibbets more diligently, a police officer might not now be dead.

At the end of the week, Josh received a phone call from Tod Burns. “Where is Casey Farrell, Sergeant? She hasn’t reported for work all this week, and the only way I know to get in touch with her is through you.”

Josh, not certain what he should tell Burns, hesitated before answering. “She had to leave town suddenly, Tod.”

Tod, whose temper was uncertain at the best of times, grunted angrily. “Without notifying me? Without a word to anyone? The woman’s only been on the job two weeks. What the hell’s going on?”

Josh sighed heavily. “I know, Tod; but there’s a good reason. It was unavoidable.”

Tod grunted again, and Josh could picture his face growing red as it always did when he was upset. “Well, may I know why? Or is this privileged information?”

Josh sighed again. “Look, I’ll tell you why she had to leave, but I’m asking you to keep it under your hat. You know that case she was involved in, the Dumpster Killer business?”

“Yes.
