How peculiar to watch the sunset in the middle of the morning. The beauty of the pink and orange sky had captured Bremusa's attention, and the implications didn't immediately set in due to the absurdity of it. Cold foreboding shot down her spine, and she shivered. She didn't need to be a supernatural creature to understand the significance of a large-scale unnatural occurrence.
"Bremusa!"
She whirled toward the house even though the cloaking glamour hid any trace of it from sight. Did Vander seek her out because he knew what was happening to the sun? Maybe heâ¦worried about her. Even as she scoffed, miniscule flutters erupted within her abdomen. Such a silly feminine reaction. She shouldn't care what concerned him.
I marked him. He's mine now.
With a sigh, she stepped out of the thicket of trees when he came into view, as if from thin air, having passed through the magical barrier. "What do you want?"
Pausing, Vander raked her from head to toe with a heated glance and smiled. "I thought you might have actually left."
"I was working on it." Calling her bluff always got her hackles up. "Took a nap first."
"Liar."
An uncomfortable silence hovered in the space between them, tense and thick. "I like the new hair," he said finally, rubbing the back of his neck. "I liked it before, but the shorter look seems to make you fiercer."
Scoffing, she clenched her fingers tightly into fists to avoid touching the uneven ends. She'd have to fix it when she had time and a mirror. Of course, she wasn't concerned with her appearance to him. No, she had to take care not to frighten the mortals when she left here. "I'm surprised you haven't woven the braid around your waist like a belt or something. You acted so entranced by it." When she met his gaze again, she took a step back and inhaled sharply. Such raw desire radiated around him. Did he even realize how blatantly he displayed it?
He's going to get himself killed if he can't control it. Hermes and Pan already disapproved. Not like they could do anything to stop it, short of killing her. Okay, maybe they could do thatâ¦but she wouldn't give them the chance. She'd leave.
Soon. Now⦠Tomorrow.
"I wasn't entranced by your hair. I couldn't stop touching it because it belonged to you." He advanced then pulled her to him by her hips. "I couldn't stop marveling how something so soft and delicate belonged to a fierce warrior who didn't take shit from anyone. Not even me."
The auburn strands in his hair shimmered copper in the sunset. Would they be as soft to the touch as hers were to him? She tightened her fist, resisting. Barely.
With great effort, Bremusa shifted her focus back where it belonged. "Any idea what this is about?" She gestured at the sun.
His lips twitched and he coughed. "Erâ¦never mind." A rose hue not unlike the sky behind him colored his cheeks as he turned from her. He'd clearly been about to say more and had thought twice about it.
