CHAPTER

25

The veil between the two worlds spat her out on the other side, the still waters of the lake by Captain Moira’s barracks disappearing behind Duna as her feet found purchase on solid ground once more in the Isle of Ur Chisisi.

Her heart pounded, every cell in her body buzzing from the brief encounter with the General. From being in his vicinity. Her breath ragged, coming in short quick wisps of air, throat burning from exertion as she calmed her raging emotions.

She shouldn’t have done it, shouldn’t have fallen prey to temptation after resisting for so long. Yet when news had come that trouble was brewing in the Kingdom of Nissa, Duna couldn’t hold back.

She had to see for herself that Cathal wasn’t in danger. The lingering effects of the fear that she had felt when facing the ghost of Madir while in the temple in Kish not allowing her to sit back and merely observe as the events unfolded.

One year, that’s how long Duna had managed to stay away. One year, and not a day longer.

When she had seen those two scantily clad women entering the General’s tent, something inside of her had snapped.

Heartache, jealousy, anger, and every other emotion in between had swarmed her system, until she couldn’t stand it any longer. Until the desire to see with her own eyes that he had moved on and forgotten all about her had finally taken over.

Nauseated beyond words, Duna had cautiously crept up to Cathal’s tent, the night’s festivities only aiding her in successfully concealing her presence–and had regretted it the instant that Duna had peered through the tent flaps.

There they had been, the General and the two females from before, standing naked in front of him as they played with each other, his heated gaze traveling over their bare flesh.

Had she not witnessed it with her own two eyes, Duna never would have believed it. The ever present tiny bud of hope that Cathal still cared for her, that he wouldn’t give up on Duna that easily, shriveling up like a parched flower in a desert drought.

But it was what Duna had needed to finally close that chapter of her life and make peace with the one truth that she knew to be inevitable: her and Cathal would never be again.

“Where have you been?”

Duna spun around, the shock of almost being caught making her oblivious to the man that had been standing in the dark, observing her as she stepped forth from the veil.

“Otho,” she mumbled, “what are you doing here?”

“I’ve been searching for you,” the handsome Captain admitted, granite eyes taking in her distraught appearance. “Lieutenant Valeria wishes to see you. There’s been another missive.”

“What, now? It’s the middle of the night.”

He shrugged. “That didn’t seem to stop you from going wherever it was that you had disappeared off to, now did it?”

“You’re right.” She squared her shoulders, erasing all remnants of the night’s events. “I’ll come in a bit, I just need a moment.”

Otho nodded, his eyes never leaving Duna.
