It took Milton nine hours to fly from Riga to Krasnodar, taking a connecting flight in Moscow. He made his way through the small and rather dingy terminal until he found the taxi rank. The meeting had been arranged to take place aboard one of the ferries that plied the water between Port Kavkaz in Krasnodar Krai and Kerch in Crimea. The terminal was fifty kilometres to the west, and Milton settled back in the cab and watched the grim Russian landscape as it rolled by on either side.

Milton knew almost nothing about the man he was here to meet, save that he would go by the name of Yakim Vinogradov. Anna said that he was not prepared for Milton to know what he looked like and that he would take the meeting only if he was satisfied that it was safe to do so. The man was paranoid, but Milton could relate to that; he would have felt exactly the same if he had still been in the Group and had been asked to meet a Russian agent. Vinogradov had been Anna’s source for years, and the only way he would have been able to ensure his continued longevity while betraying the Unit was to be very, very careful.

The traffic to the west of Krasnodar was bad, and, as the minutes ticked by, Milton looked at his watch with an increasing sense of trepidation. He wanted to ask the driver how long he thought it would take, but his Russian was limited, and he didn’t want to give away the fact that he was a foreigner. He had to make do with the Google map on his phone and keep his fingers crossed that the red lines that signified heavy traffic would clear before they reached them. This was not the sort of rendezvous where tardiness would be tolerated. Vinogradov was bound to be twitchy, and Milton didn’t want to give him any reason at all to abandon the plan and disappear.

If the ferry departed and he wasn’t on it, Vinogradov would vanish, and there would be no second chances.
