Duccio di Buoninsegna (1260–1319), the dominant figure in early Sienese art, is represented along with his school in rooms 3 and 4. Bernard Berenson considered Duccio the last great painter of antiquity, in contrast to Giotto, the first of the moderns. A rather more Gothic and expressive character is suggested by Ugolino di Nerio’s Crucifixion and Madonna in room 4.

Sienese art over the next century has its departures from Duccio – Lorenzetti’s mastery of landscape and life in the Good and Bad Government in the Palazzo Pubblico, for example – but the patrons responsible for commissioning works generally wanted more of the same: decorative paintings, whose gold backgrounds made their subjects stand out in the gloom of medieval chapels. As well as specifying the required materials and composition, the Sienese patrons – bankers, guilds, religious orders – would often nominate a particular painting as the model for the style they wanted.
