PALACIO DE VALLE
BY TRAIN
The train station (43 52 5495) is over the road from the bus station at Calle 49 e/ 58 y 60, though as services to or from anywhere are painfully slow, very few foreign visitors arrive or depart by train. In July 2017 the service to Havana was reinstated after a suspension of over a year. From the station, it’s a 15min walk or a $2CUC taxi ride into the town centre; a taxi to Punta Gorda costs around $4CUC.
Destinations Havana (every third day; 10hr); Sancti Spíritus (1 daily; 6hr); Santa Clara (1 daily; 2hr 30min).
BY CAR
Arriving by car from Trinidad, you’ll enter Cienfuegos on Avenida 5 de Septiembre, which connects up with the city grid four blocks east of Calle 37, the main street and the road on which you’ll arrive if you’ve driven from Havana or Varadero. The most convenient and secure place to park is in the La Unión hotel car park ($2CUC/day), opposite the hotel on Calle 31.
BY FERRY
Small tugboat-like ferries to and from Castillo de Jagua (3 daily; 1hr; $0.50CUC each way) use the tiny ferry terminal at Avenida 46, at the foot of Calle 25, in Pueblo Nuevo, within easy walking distance of Parque José Martí.
GETTING AROUND
You can walk around Pueblo Nuevo, but you’ll probably want to use some kind of transport if you intend to explore the 3km length of Punta Gorda.
By bus The #1 bus travels infrequently up and down Calle 37, with several stops in Punta Gorda and turns round at the Palacio de Valle. It’s by far the cheapest way to get between Pueblo Nuevo and Punta Gorda. Fares are 20c in CUP – make sure you’ve got roughly the right change.
By horse-drawn carriage Horse-drawn carriages go up and down Calle 37 all day; there are no fixed stops, you just flag them down. Cubans usually pay a set fare of one national peso, but non-Cubans are as likely to be asked for a convertible peso.
By taxi Cubataxi (43 51 9145) has cars hanging around the Jagua hotel car park in Punta Gorda and outside the La Unión hotel in Pueblo Nuevo.
Car and scooter rental For car rental, Havanautos/Cubacar are at Calle 37 e/ 16 y 18 (daily 8am–8pm; 43 55 1211); the hotel Casa Verde car park (Mon–Fri 8am–8pm, Sat 8am–5pm; 43 55 2014); and opposite the Hotel Unión at Calle 31 e/ 54 y 56 (Mon–Fri 8am–8pm, Sat 8am–5pm; 43 55 1645). Scooter rental is available from Motoclub at Avenida 18 esq. 37 (daily 9am–5pm; $13CUC/2hr, $25CUC/day).
INFORMATION
Tourist office The national tourist information provider Infotur has several branches in the city, at Avenida 56 no.3117 e/ 31 y 33 (Mon–Sat 9am–6pm; 43 51 4653), Avenida 54 e/ 29 y 31 (Mon–Sat 9am–6pm; 43 55 8840) and at the bus station.
Websites The best source for film, theatre and live music listings is the state-sponsored azurina.cult.cu.
TOURS AND TRAVEL AGENTS
The city’s travel agents can organize tours of Cienfuegos and excursions around the province and beyond; prices don’t vary much from one agency to another.
