When the House of Commons moved to deprive the king of command over the militia, and threatened to impeach the Queen (who was a Catholic), Charles in person attempted to arrest for treason five of the Puritan leaders in Parliament. He was baffled in this, and left London, soon setting up the royal standard at Nottingham. The Civil War had begun.

We cannot trace in detail here the fierce intricate story of the Civil Wars. Revolutions have a way of devouring their own children, it is said, and so it came to pass in seventeenth-century Britain. By 1644, the Royalists had been beaten in the field. But by that time, the Puritans had split into two opposed factions, in Parliament and in Britain generally: the Presbyterians of England, allied with the Presbyterian Scots, on the one hand; and on the other side, the Independents or Congregationalists, more radical in church government and in secular politics. The Presbyterians dominated Parliament, but the Roundhead army, commanded by Oliver Cromwell, adhered to the Independents.
