“Jack.” My shoulder is shaken. “Jack, wake up.”

“Huh?” I open an eye to see Nellie leaning over me.

“It’s time to go to dinner.”

“You’re kidding.” I sit up and check the clock on the nightstand, shocked to realize I slept the afternoon away. “Okay. Just let me brush my teeth and change.”

She chuckles, and plops on the bed. “Only you would worry about changing at a nudist colony.”

I step to the bathroom.

“So how was the massage?”

“It was wonderful. Just what I needed. Thanks for setting it up.” I run a brush through my hair, which is completely mashed down on one side.

“I agree with her assessment.”

I step out and snatch the papers from her. “That’s private.”

“You’re uptight and anxiety driven. Well, duh. That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you—”

“You want to eat? Let’s go.” I step into my flip flops. I swear, my cracked and dirty flats are going in the first dumpster I come to when we get to Las Vegas. Tomorrow, thank God.

“Tonight is a luau, on the beach.”

“Really? That should be fun.”

“Yeah, they are epic. Great food, then we sit around and share.”

I pull open the door and stop. “Share what?”

“Just a discussion about our belief systems. No big deal. You don’t have to share if you don’t want to.”

Well, the food will be good, anyway. I can duck out, after.

I wish I could call Leo. At this hour, he’s probably working in his studio. I love watching the muscles in his forearms flexing as he works tin snips. His intent focus, a jaw muscle flexing while he thinks. One lone curl, falling onto his forehead. Why didn’t I ever tell him that? This far away, all my reasons seem excuses.

But I feel the magnetic pull of him in my core. He’s somehow gotten under my skin, to nestle somewhere inside me. I’ve never been tempted to delve into a relationship before. Even more startling, the thought doesn’t make me want to run and hide, for fear he’ll see the real me under the façade.

I’d planned on mining my grandmother’s secrets on this trip. But it seems I’m discovering as much about my own.
