An aerial photograph of Sarasota’s downtown in 1964, looking west from Palm Avenue, illustrated how much the old Sarasota was being overshadowed by the new.

In the forefront of the photo were the ’20s boom-era buildings showing their age: Mira Mar Apartments and Mira Mar Hotel, Orange Blossom Hotel, Hotel Sarasota and small businesses along Main Street.

At Gulfstream Avenue and west were the new Gulf Stream Towers and the old city hall building, surrounded by the rerouted Highway U.S. 41, Island Park and the preparatory work for Marina Mar.

The ten-story Gulf Stream Towers, the first major high-rise building on Gulfstream Avenue, was designed by noted Sarasota School of Architecture architect Edward J. “Tim” Seibert. The building was expected to cost $1,700,000, and Seibert said, “The apartments are designed on the motif of the fashionable apartments that have made up the bay front of Rio de Janeiro.”
