The saying “you can’t go home again” reflects the experience of many people, including Jesus. Having begun His Galilean ministry, Jesus went to the synagogue in His hometown of Nazareth, as was His practice. Someone handed Him a scroll containing the words of Isaiah, and He read a passage from Isaiah that the Jews would recognize as describing the Messiah. Jesus concluded with, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21), leaving no doubt about His claim to be the Messiah.
Initially some people marveled at His teaching, but Jesus’ hometown did not accept Him. An angry mob drove Him from the synagogue and out of town. Those citizens of Nazareth could not accept that the local carpenter’s son was the long-awaited Messiah.
Jesus wanted to minister to the people of His hometown, and He wants to bring lost people into His kingdom today. When you share the gospel with others, you also might be rejected by those who know you well. When such times arise, remember Jesus also faced rejection but didn’t let that deter Him.
