Behind Closed Doors

“Hello is that Marie Coyle?”

“Yes, who’s speaking?” Marie snapped.

“Listen and don’t interrupt. I have a message for your brothers. The two Russians responsible for the woman’s death are holed up in Spittle Farm, on the way to Loch Lomond, three miles north of Drymen. Have you got that?”

“Paddy’s not here, he’s out of the country,” answered Marie.

“Well, you better get him back because they won’t hang around. . .”

The line went dead and Marie couldn’t make up her mind if the call had been genuine or a hoax. It was strange that the caller had made no mention of the reward offered by Michael, which would lead her to believe the call was kosher. What should she do? Paddy had enough on his plate in Marbella, and no way could she give this information to Michael. Although her poor brother appeared to be dealing with his grief, he would be unable to resist going after them, with or without Paddy. This could tip him over the edge. No, she would deal with this herself. For years she had bemoaned the fact that her brothers didn’t take her seriously, and since the first contact with these guys, Paddy had upped the security surrounding her to a ridiculous level; she might as well put them to good use.

“The wrong fucking house, you got the wrong house? I can’t believe it,” Davey Thomson doubled over with laughter. “Not only did you torch the wrong fucking house, you even managed to screw that up.”

The two conspirators stood shamefaced at the derision levelled at them by Davey Senior.

“Number twenty-six? Everybody and his dog knows old Ma Coyle lives at number twenty-eight Lomond Crescent. Fuck, if you’d asked me, I could have told you. But no, you pair of plastic gangsters sit about all day staking the joint and still get the address wrong.”

“Da! Give us a break,” whined Davey’s son. “Anyone can make a mistake.”

“Give you a break? What a pair of clowns. You couldn’t organise a piss-up in a brewery. Not only did you get the wrong house, you didn’t have the nous to do it properly. Any self-respecting arsonist knows to do the back first and then the front of the building, that way there are seldom any survivors. I swear to God, it’s Dumb and Dumber. I don’t know who’s the thickest.”

“You wouldn’t speak to us like that if you knew . . .”

Cortellessa, concerned Junior was about to blow the whistle on their activities, interrupted his mate, “Sorry, Davey, we cocked up big-time.”

“What were you about to tell me, son? What amazing piece of skulduggery have you two performed that will make us all fall at your feet in admiration?”

“Nothing,” said his sullen son, backing out of the room.

“That’s it, I’m done,” Junior ranted. “I can’t take any more from that old bastard, I’m going to finish him off once and for all. Fuck Paddy Coyle, he can wait. I’m not being treated like a fucking idiot by anyone, far less my old man.
