Rose tried to put her concerns about Lynch to the back of her mind as she continued her search, trying to link all the victims of the Railroad killings. It was a thankless task. Hundreds of thousands of pupils studied in California each year, and the fact that Nathan Anderson and Rogan Hobbs had been in the state during the same period in the Nineties was not the greatest of connections. But the simple fact was this was the closest thing to a lead they’d had since the whole investigation started.

Teams had been set up throughout the country, from Chicago down to her current spot in Longview. Each worked on their own particular homicides, reporting back to her, but no significant connections had yet been made.

She made some more coffee and considered calling Lynch again. But what was the point? He was as stubborn as they came, and she had no real authority over him. She didn’t want to believe what he’d said about them being bit players in some game beyond their comprehension, and the only way to prove that was to get some results.

Still, she wanted to speak to him. Seeing him again had brought back more than bitter memories. She’d felt a connection during the few times they’d had together four years earlier, and there had been nothing like it since. She’d been too busy for anything serious, though deep down she knew she’d purposefully closed herself off from any possibility of a meaningful relationship. She found it hard to believe that Lynch could be that person, but couldn’t deny that her feelings ran deeper, beyond a purely professional relationship.

While the coffee was brewing, she decided to call Abigail. They still hadn’t spoken since the beginning of the investigation, her younger sister apparently refusing to return any of her calls or messages. As this latest call went straight to voicemail it would normally have caused Rose alarm, but she could see from Abigail’s social media posts that her sister was still out and about in the world. She’d attended a law function the previous evening – a photograph of her and Oliver, her fiancé, resplendent in their evening dress. Rose had hoped they would have grown closer since their mother’s death, but the opposite had been true. Abigail was building her own life, without Rose in it, and Rose feared it would only get worse between them.

As she waited for McBride to provide updates, Rose checked the other victims’ links to California, but came up blank. California didn’t have to be the key, but Rose couldn’t help feeling deflated. Nor could she deny the feeling that they were just waiting. The killer was making his way down the railroad and showed no sign of stopping.

She checked the clock. One of the southbound Texas Eagle trains would be between St Louis and Arcadia, while the other would be close to its destination in San Antonio. It was as if, at any minute, the call could come through, dragging them to another city and another victim.
