I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in him.
Psalm 40:1–3
Sometimes we find ourselves in “the mud and mire” of life because of our dumb choices, the failure of others, or circumstances beyond our control. Whatever the cause, God wants us to look to him, trust him with our past and our future, and sing songs of praise and hope because we’re sure he’s always in control.
For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.
Proverbs 24:16
Failure isn’t the biggest problem we face. The most crushing problem is when we respond to failure with hopelessness instead of faith. No matter how many times we fall, God is there to help us get up again and start taking steps forward. His love never fails.
Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”
Lamentations 3:22–24
When we experience financial failure, we may think our life is over. In this passage, Jeremiah assures us that God’s tender love and strong hand are with us every day. In fact, they are as sure as the sunrise each day.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
Jeremiah 29:11–13
Despair and depression rob us of perception and cloud our sense of hope. Even when the children of Israel experienced the tragedy of exile away from their homes, God assured them that his purposes for them were always good and right. They could trust in him because he had proven he was faithful, even in their darkest moments.
