Naturally, the Egyptians who carved the statue would not have used the word Sphinx to describe it, as the mythology of Egypt was very different from that which would develop around the changing iconography of later cultures and eras. The Great Sphinx of Giza for the Egyptians who carved it was part of a tradition of protective sentries, carved to watch over the tombs of the dead. Guardian statues were usually associated with the sun god Re and often had the image of the current pharaoh carved into them. It is for this reason that most scholars have long assumed the Sphinx’s face represented the ruler who oversaw its construction.
