CHAPTER 14

The Jasper Estate

When they stepped inside, Faye shuddered as the gloom of the place gently floated around them. The interior was beautiful with parquet floors, rugs with Mesoamerican designs, and intricate wallpaper. A large crystal chandelier cascaded from a tall ceiling with elegant moldings, and sconces bathed the foyer in a rather lonely glow.

It was a very empty home.

The butler who had let them in closed the door behind them and led them away. She grabbed Luke’s hand as they walked down the hallway, and sought solace in his firm, confident grip.

“How are you feeling?” He whispered.

“Sad.”

He hummed in agreement. They all stopped at a large set of double oak doors, and Oliver glanced back at the two of them nervously. The butler pushed on the handle and walked forward, entering the room.

“Your guests are here, Avery,” she said. “I’ll send refreshments right away.”

The three of them stepped into the magnificent living room and saw Avery sitting in an armchair by the hearth. There was no fire in it, not that it was necessary given the pleasant weather of Paradise Cove. He looked surprisingly frail as if he hadn’t eaten or slept well for some time. His skin no longer held a golden undertone, but instead had a dullness that made him look somewhat ill. His eyes were a little sunken in with no light in them, and his cheekbones were a little more prominent than Faye remembered.

“Welcome,” he said as he stood from his chair and walked to shake their hands. “I’m sorry your first visit here is under such gloomy circumstances, Faye. Normally you would've received a small welcome party.”

She shook her head graciously. “Not at all. It’s been very…eventful since I came to Paradise Cove. Parties wouldn’t have been appropriate.”

“Erin’s passing shook us all, yes,” he recalled, “and my father had passed away only weeks before that. Now my brother’s missing. It’s a lot to process, but enough about that. Come sit.”

Oliver took the chaise lounge adjacent to the couch that Faye and Luke chose. Faye looked at Avery’s hands as he sat down but saw nothing, but she could sense Luke’s energy shifting next to her. Ever since she’d managed to travel into her limbo, she realized that she was strangely more attuned to Luke than ever before. Though it wasn’t always noticeable, it was hard to ignore in times like this.

“You know,” Avery started with a careful look at the two, “there’s something about you guys when you’re around each other. I’m not sure what it is, but I noticed it when I met Faye for the first time in your studio, Luke. The whole energy changes.”

Faye was surprised it was that obvious, but Luke was unfazed.

“Yes,” he said calmly, “we seem to have good synergy with each other.”

“It reminds me of Sam and I,” he said fondly. “We were thick as thieves when we were younger, and it always felt like we were capable of so much more whenever we were around each other.
