Chapter Thirteen
Adam saw nothing, but he knew from the fear in Cheryl's eyes they weren't alone. His ghosts were there again, showing themselves to her. This time she wasn't going to run away. He wouldn't let her even if she tried. He'd block the exit and make her stay. He'd hold on to her, not letting her go. It was wrong, but he wasn't going to be left alone again. Now she'd seen the ghosts, they were connected. She seemed to know that too.
The fear drained from her eyes as she walked in his direction staring intensely at a spot on the wall. "Tell us what you want. We only want to help you." She glanced over at him. With every passing second, she seemed to gain confidence.
"Are they saying something?" he asked.
She held her finger to her lips. "Not yet."
Adam searched for them with his eyes but saw nothing. As he focused, he could feel them now, a pressure pushing on his right shoulder. "I want to know what I can do to help you move on." He looked at the empty air next to him. His blood ran cold as the pressure on his shoulder increased. He wanted to move, to run out of the room, but she was staying, and so would he. He usually stayed and knew if he willed himself, he was able to cope with the discomfort the spirits brought with them. He took a step to his left to put some distance between him and the spirits. The pressure in his shoulder decreased, and he took another step away from them, finding it decreased even more. "Are they saying anything?"
She held up her finger again.
It was hard to be quiet. He wanted to know what was happening. He fought his need to be in control and bit his tongue.
They stayed there quiet for what felt like forever. Adam's mind raced. The pressure on his shoulder increased again, and he walked away from it, standing next to Cheryl. He followed her gaze and looked at the same point on the wall she focused on. He saw nothing. Why did he see nothing? They had been destroying his life for months. Shouldn't they give him the courtesy of showing themselves to him?
Cheryl groaned, and he looked over just in time to see her head fall forward, her shoulders slump, her knees buckle. She tumbled to the floor. Adam reached for her, his arms encircling her just in time to cushion her fall. He laid her gently on the floor and looked at her face, her small nose a contrast to her full dark lips. Her eyes slid from side to side beneath her eyelids. Her muscles twitched. Adam knelt at her side. "Wake up," he said, nudging her shoulder, but she didn't respond.
The air in the room grew heavy. The pressure he'd previously felt on one shoulder spread across his entire body, like a lead apron being draped over him. "What's happening?" he said aloud.
Her face spasmed.
