The temperance movement expected to curb violence and crime, but ultimately, Prohibition produced the opposite result. Puritanical Prohibitionist supporters found themselves unable to eliminate social problems with their utopian dreams, and it quickly became evident that those who had the desire to drink would go to desperate—and sometimes inventive—lengths to do it. At the same time, gangsters seized on what they saw as the perfect sales opportunity. “The business of manufacturing alcohol, liquor and beer will go out of the hands of law-abiding members of the community, and will be transferred to the…criminal class,” warned Yale professor William Taft, the former president who soon would be appointed as Chief of the Supreme Court.
